Analysis: “Tell Me You Love Me” by Demi Lovato

F*ck this song. I’d prefer to listen to silence…. let’s dive right into the lyrics, shall we?

“Oh no, here we go again
Fighting over what I said
I’m sorry, yeah I’m sorry
Bad at love, no, I’m not good at this
But I can’t say I’m innocent
Not hardly, but I’m sorry”

Oh look a song about an unhealthy relationship… yawn. So riveting and original (my eyes are gonna get stuck one day). If this person fighting over something they said is a common occurrence (which it seems like it is from these lyrics) then the person should fix their poor communication habits and learn how to effectively communicate without inducing fights.

“And all my friends, they know and it’s true
I don’t know who I am without you
I got it bad, baby
Got it bad”

Yeah, that’s really bad. If you do not know who you are then you should not be in a relationship. To not know who you are without someone else means you are defining who you are by someone else’s opinion of you. Suuuper unhealthy and can lead to anxiety and depression. Anxiety because we cannot control how others respond to us. Depression because we are not giving ourselves the credit we deserve and we are not seeing our own worth and value.

“Oh, tell me you love me
I need someone on days like this, I do
On days like this
Oh, tell me you love me
I need someone
On days like this, I do
On days like this
Oh, can you hear my heart say
No, you ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody
You ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody”

Nope. Nope. Nope. So tired of this ideology that we need someone else to love us in order to be valued. Whoever says this junk is a dick. You are somebody. If someone truly thinks they need someone else they have been misguided and I hope they can work on themselves to realize they are someone -no matter what. Not surprised this person “needs someone”. Sounds like they need someone to give them recognition 24/7 – not only on “days like this.” Codependency, anyone?

“And I hope I never see the day
That you move on and be happy without me
Without me
What’s my hand without your heart to hold?
I don’t know what I’m living for
If I’m living without you”

Seriously? If you don’t know what you are living for without a person -seek professional counseling or read a book about codependency. Just more language convincing me the person singing this song is very unhealthy.

“All my friends, they know and it’s true
I don’t know who I am without you
I’ve got it bad, baby
I got it bad”

So bored with this narrative.

“Oh, tell me you love me
I need someone on days like this, I do
On days like this
Oh, tell me you love me
I need someone
On days like this, I do
On days like this
Oh, can you hear my heart say
You ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody
You ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody
My heart’s like
No, you ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody
You ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody”

Snooze….

“Everything I need
Is standing in front of me
I know that we will be alright, alright, yeah
Through the ups and downs
Baby, I’ma stick around
I promise we will be alright, alright”

Not surprising they would stay since they are codependent.

“Oh, tell me you love me
I need someone on days like this, I do
On days like this
Oh, tell me you love me
I need someone
On days like this, I do
On days like this
Oh, can you hear my heart say
You ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody
You ain’t nobody ’til you got somebody”

Please make it stop.

“Everything I need
Is standing right in front of me
I know that we will be alright, alright, yeah”

Is there a therapist standing in front of her?
